A small piece of land, forest and a wooden house

(2023 - in progress)

A century or two ago people would get together with their neighbours, cut trees in the nearby forest, shape the wood into timber and together build a wooden house next to that forest. The house would be close to water and have one bedroom window toward the east. Then the first light of the sun would wake them. It would be a very modest way of living, but each window would always have colourful flowers on the outside and there would be a long table with simple benches outside for the big family to have lunch halfway the long working day.

Fast forward those centuries to today, and I feel we are coming back to using wood again. It took a few generations maybe but we are appreciating again natural building materials. They makes homes healthier living spaces which are warmer and cozy. And people say that the process of building a house from wood or other natural materials is also a time where other transformations happen. Where we start seeing the forest with more grateful eyes, where we cherish old crafts and skills that seemed almost forgotten, where we look at people working with their hands from a very different perspective.  And the process of building a house from natural materials, also changes your perspective on living. Being more connected to the nature, appreciate also your own food and water and other basic things, which are foundation for healthy living.

This is a story about Mihela & Robert, who were working all around the globe, having big responsibilities and busy lives, but decided to slow down and appreciate what nature have to offer to them. They started a new chapter in their life. Buying a land in Koroska region, Slovenia, close to where Mihela was growing up. There are two streams on the land, and a place to grow food to be self-sufficient. Plenty of natural resources... And they made there a new home in a traditional skeletal wood structure way.
